Power-flushing is a process used to clean central heating systems. It involves circulating chemicals and water through the system at high velocity to remove any build-up of sludge, rust or debris. Power-flushing is recommended for systems that are experiencing issues such as cold spots on radiators, strange noises or reduced efficiency.

The power-flushing process typically involves the following steps:

1. The heating system is isolated and drained down.
2. A powerful power-flush machine is connected to the system and chemicals are added to break down any sludge or debris.
3. The power-flush machine circulates the chemicals and water through the system at high velocity, dislodging any debris.
4. The dirty water is flushed out of the system and replaced with clean water.
5. The system is refilled and treated with inhibitor to prevent future build-up.

Power-flushing can take several hours to complete depending on the size of the system and the severity of the build-up. It is important to use a qualified engineer who has experience in power-flushing.

There are several benefits to power-flushing your central heating system. These include:

1. Improved efficiency - removing sludge and debris allows heat to be distributed more evenly throughout the system, which can improve efficiency and reduce energy bills.

We also check your boilers performance during the power-flushing process and make sure it is also working to its optimum efficiency. Please note, only Gas Safe registered engineers can carry out this type of work.

The Power-flush

After checking the heating system to pin point problem areas, We will attach our power-flush machine in place of your central heating pump. If you have a gravity system (header tank in attic feeding your central heating) We will disconnect your tank and connect your feed and vent pipes with a valve so that these pipes are power-flushed (important) We will then do an initial flush then add cleaning chemicals to the system and allow these to circulate around the system. Once the chemicals have had time to work, we then close all radiators and flush each radiator individually reversing the flow and adjuvating until each radiator is running clear and within the TDS (total dissolved solids) readings.

The test & Reconnection 

We then flush the whole system through and take readings of your central heating system water and record them on your Power-flush certificate. We then reinstate your header tank (gravity systems. Magnetic filter is cleaned out (if you have one) inhibitor is then added to your system. We then disconnect the power-flush machine and reinstate your central heating pump. We can also install a magnetic filter to your system at this point if you do not already have one. (This will be at an extra cost, but you will be aware of this while booking your power-flush)

Balancing & Safety checks 

After power-flushing your system it is very important to properly balance the system. This is done by setting the flow through each individual radiator. 

We will then carry out safety checks on your boiler to make sure it is running to its maximum efficiency. These checks can only be carried out by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Radiators cold at the bottom?

This is one of the main signs your central heating system needs a power-flush. Sludge will start to build up at the bottom of your radiators causing the middle bottom of your radiators to stay cold or very slowly warm up.

Black or Brown water

Black or brown water when airing/bleeding your radiators is a sure sign your central heating system needs cleaning. Sludge (Rust) discolours the water in your heating system.

If your central heating pump is making strange noises this is a clear sign that your pump is struggling and becoming blocked with sludge then a power-flush is usually necessary.
