Oil boiler common faults

Below is a list of common oil boiler faults that we encounter on a daily basis. These issues range from minor component wear to more complex system faults that can affect performance and reliability. Identifying these problems early can help prevent costly breakdowns, improve efficiency, and extend the lifespan of your boiler. Our list outlines typical causes. Ensure your Oil boiler is serviced annually so your heating system continues to operate safely and effectively throughout the year.

1. Boiler Fails to Start (Lockout Light On)

Possible Causes:

  • No oil in the tank

  • Blocked oil line or filter

  • Air in the fuel line

  • Faulty photocell (flame sensor)

  • Ignition failure

  • Faulty control box

2. Boiler Starts Then Shuts Down

Possible Causes:

  • Dirty or misaligned photocell not detecting flame

  • Poor fuel atomisation (nozzle or pump issue)

  • Faulty solenoid coil on oil pump

3. Noisy Operation / Rumbling Burner

Possible Causes:

  • Incorrect air-to-fuel ratio

  • Carbon build-up in combustion chamber

  • Nozzle wear or incorrect nozzle size

  • Poorly adjusted air intake

  • Air trapped in the heat exchanger

4. Excessive Smoke or Soot

Possible Causes:

  • Dirty nozzle

  • Partially blocked or damaged flue

  • Incomplete combustion due to incorrect air mix

  • Faulty burner adjustment

Immediate action required

You should switch off your boiler and call an engineer if you see black smoke or  soot build up. Soot buildup can restrict heat transfer and cause the boiler to overheat and lead to potential fires.

5. Oil Smell Around the Boiler

Possible Causes:

  • Fuel leak in oil line or fittings

  • Burner not properly sealed

  • Incomplete combustion

Immediate actions

  • Turn off the Boiler, turn off the Oil Valve

  • Ventilate the area

If the smell is strong and persists, Call an engineer to inspect the  boiler and fuel line before trying to operate the boiler.

6. Boiler Locking Out in Cold Weather

Possible Causes:

  • Condensate pipe frozen or blocked

  • Condensation freezing in external oil lines

  • No fuel

7. Low Boiler Pressure

Possible Causes:

  • Leak in system

  • Faulty pressure relief valve or expansion vessel

8. Burner Not Firing but Fan Running

Possible Causes:

  • No spark at electrodes

  • Faulty ignition transformer

  • Faulty control box

  • No fuel

  • Disruption in fuel line

9. Boiler Short-Cycling (Turns On and Off Frequently)

Possible Causes:

  • Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor

  • Incorrect burner setup

  • Blocked heat exchanger or poor circulation

  • Blocked Flue

10. Boiler Producing White Smoke

Possible Causes:

  • Condensation in flue (normal at startup, especially in cold conditions)

  • Poor combustion (improper air supply or water in fuel)

  • Blocked burner Nozzle

  • Water  in combustion chamber
